Test Your Pool Water - Like a Pro!

Most pool owners don't get too excited about water testing, but if you are that rare breed of pool owner, or a pool service guy who likes to geek out on pool chemistry, this post is for you.

Duo test kits and test strips? Naah - kids' stuff. You want a real test kit, for accurate readings. The kind that the county health inspector or pool service people use.

For pools mandated to be balanced, the pool guy on the route, or the home pool chemist, here's the tools (test kits) that the pros use!

Taylor Test Kits

Taylor test kits for pools have been around since the late sixties, but the company has been around since 1930.They are the standard in the industry, and have a wide range of testing products across dozens of industries, not just pool and spa test kits. Here's a selection of good Taylor test kits for home or professional use.

GOOD:
TAYLOR DPD COMPLETE - LOW

TAYLOR K-2015 TEST KIT

  • Free & Total Chlorine to 2.5ppm; Bromine to 5ppm, DPD colormetric visual comparator
  • pH - 7.0 - 8.0, Phenol Red colormetric visual comparator
  • Acid Demand and Base Demand Titration tests
  • Calcium Hardness Titration test
  • Total Alkalinity Titration test
  • Cyanuric Acid Turbidity test

The Taylor K2105 has all the tests of the one below, but costs $20 less. It's a low-range test kit, testing chlorine only up to 2.5ppm. A smaller range allows for more discernment of small color changes within the comparator. The pH testing range is also limited, measuring 7.0-8.0.

BETTER:TAYLOR DPD TEST KIT

taylor k2005 test kit

  • Free & Total Chlorine to 5ppm; Bromine to 10ppm, DPD colormetric visual comparator
  • pH - 6.8 - 8.2, Phenol Red colormetric visual comparator
  • Acid Demand and Base Demand Titration tests
  • Calcium Hardness Titration test
  • Total Alkalinity Titration test
  • Cyanuric Acid Turbidity test

This is the full battery of tests for any pool or spa. The K2005 test kit has 3/4 oz bottles, K2005C is the same kit, with 2 oz bottles. With either one, you can be sure that your pool water will be balanced, with accurate titration testing.

BEST: TAYLOR FAS-DPD TEST KIT

Taylor FAS DPD test kit

  • Free & Total Chlorine to 5ppm; Bromine to 10ppm, FAS-DPD Titrant test
  • pH - 6.8 - 8.2, Phenol Red colormetric visual comparator
  • Acid Demand and Base Demand Titration tests
  • Calcium Hardness Titration test
  • Total Alkalinity Titration test
  • Cyanuric Acid Turbidity test

The Taylor FAS-DPD K2006 uses a titration test for chlorine, where you count the drops used, instead of relying on a visual color comparison. Provides precision measurement of Free and Total chlorine, to allow for a more accurate combined chlorine test. K2006C uses 2 oz reagent bottles.

LaMotte Test Kits

LaMotte is one of the oldest water test kit companies in America, when Frank LaMotte decided to open up shop near Baltimore, Md to produce a specialized pH reagent. By 1930 they had their first print catalog. LaMotte company is still led by the LaMotte family, and serves a broad spectrum of industry testing needs. Here's a selection of good, better, best test kits by LaMotte.

GOOD: COLOR-Q PRO 7

COLORQ PRO 7 TEST KITS

  • Free & Total Chlorine to 10ppm; Bromine to 22ppm, DPD Digital Photometer

  • Acid Demand and Base Demand Titration tests
  • Calcium Hardness 0-700ppm
  • Total Alkalinity 0-250ppm
  • Cyanuric Acid 0-125ppm

The ColorQ-7 uses just 5 drops per test, and it does the rest. The photometer 'reads' the water, and displays the reading on its digital display. It has 144 tests with included reagents (50 for calcium and cyanuric acid test). Zipper soft case.

BETTER: COLOR-Q PRO 7 PLUS

ColorQ Pro 7 Plus test kit
