Is your pool pump electric bill out of control?

Help! My swimming pool pump is robbing me blind!
You can save energy and maintain a comfortable swimming pool temperature by using a smaller, higher efficiency pump and operating it less. In a study of 120 pools by the Center for Energy Conservation at Florida Atlantic University, some pool owners saved as much as 75% of their original pool filtration bill when they used these energy conservation measures (see table below).
And the best thing about energy efficient pumps are the rebates available. Many energy providers, such as San Diego Gas & Electric, Pacific Gas & Electric Company and Southern California Edison. Each offers hundreds of dollars in rebates. Just to use your pool timer or energy efficient pump. You can click here to calculate your own savings, or use the chart below for another idea.
Do I really need to buy an Energy Efficient Pump?
Just by downsizing or operating your pump with a little thought, you can reduce your energy savings up to 75%
But, how do you know how much filtration your pool needs? Every pool is different, and will require different amounts of filtration at different times of the year. Generally speaking, given a properly sized filter, and proper filtration, a pool should run at least 8 hours per day in the winter, and up to 18 hours per day in the hottest part of the summer.
Experimenting with different run times is the best way to determine the need for your pool. Try reducing the run time by an hour each day, until you begin to see the water become a little cloudy. This is the "do-not-go-below" point. Increase the time by an hour, and the water clarity should return.
Running your pump less may require a bit closer management of your chlorine levels and pH levels. But this is usually still much cheaper than paying these electrical utilities. So, run the pump less, and you'll be paying less while enjoying a "greener", more environmentally friendly swimming pool!
