- The Most Common Pool Leak
My cousin Joe Cox sent me an email with the subject line: The Pool is Leaking. Knowing his pool the way I do, I immediately emailed him back a response. Lay on the deck and lean over to look inside the skimmer. Look for any cracks at the point where the plastic skimmer meets the white plaster. If you see any debris sucked into these cracks or voids, a pool putty repair is indicated." I love trying to sound like a doctor! Joe found the cracks and the debris, cleaned it up a bit and made a pool putty repair (described below).

- Winter Pool Leak Detection
Winter pool leaks are no fun to find and fix. The water is cold and so is the concrete that you lay on. It is important however to keep the pool full, for the reasons mentioned above. If you cannot locate it, and want to wait until spring, keep the pool filled with a garden hose during winter, and be sure to pump off solid covers promptly, until you can fix this winter pool leak - in the spring!

- Pool Skimmer Care & Repair
Pool skimmers come in many types and sizes. Some are free floating in the pool, but most pool skimmers are attached to the wall of the pool. Water passes a free-floating weir, which accelerates flow into the skimmer, and keeps it trapped when the pump shuts off. Your pump pulls the surface water of your pool into the skimmer basket, accessed through a top lid.

- How to Install a Pool Skimmer Weir
Check your skimmer weirs today, making sure they are not broken, missing parts or becoming stuck on the sidewalls of the skimmer. For such situations, replacement is in order. Buy the skimmer weir that matches the width of your skimmer, as measured across the front of the plastic skimmer opening, where it meets the wall of the pool. Here's a video to show how easy it is to install your own pool skimmer weirs.

- How's the pool water level - is your pool leaking?
Any pool type leaking during winter should not be allowed to drain completely. This can cause havoc on vinyl or concrete pools. Add water to your pool if a leaking pool drops within 1 foot from the shallow end floor. Vinyl liners will relax and wrinkle, possibly cracking or "snapping", and concrete pools risk cracking, drying of plaster finish and popping out of the ground due to hydrostatic pressure.

- Air Leaks in the Lines
The sometimes elusive air leak can be more dangerous than a water leak. As air is sucked back into your system the pump can lose prime. When the system is turned back on it puts extra stress on the pump and can even lead to melted/warped components. In short, an air leak can damage plumbing and pump components leading to costly repairs. To prevent these drastic damages all leaks or loose connections at the equipment pool pad should be repaired promptly and correctly.
