Cullen Jones is my Hero. Holder of several world records - countless Gold & Silver medals and tireless advocate for minority kids learning to swim. His success as a swimmer is near legendary, but what is more impressive is the time and effort he devotes to motivating minority kids to get in the water, and learn to swim. It is estimated that 60% of black kids cannot swim effectively and have a 300% greater risk of drowning than white kids.

  • VGB Update - CPSC reverses earlier decision
This past week, the CPSC redefined the definition of an unblockable drain, reversing an earlier decision made which allowed for installing a unblockable drain cover - on a blockable drain. Problem with that is, as pointed out in the thoughtfulletter to the CPSC sent by Nancy Baker, the mother of Graeme - that drains break or work themselves loose, and then a grave danger exists. The high profile loss of Abigail Taylor and Zachary Cohn were due to missing drain covers.

  • Lifeguard! Put down the Phone and No One Gets Hurt!
    Rob Cox
Just as these wonderful devices have created tragedy on the highways and parking lots of America, young swimmers have drowned beneath the diverted eyes of a lifeguard who could not disconnect from their device. The modified regulations to the 1990 ADA were published September 15, 2010 in the Federal Register. The ADA ensures Americans with disabilities will not be faced with discrimination, and certain public and semi-public swimming pools now need to provide a pool lift for every 300 sq. ft. of pool perimeter.

Not such a rare occurance, people driving their cars into their swimming pools. A real mess to clean up, but usually the driver and occupants escaped unharmed.
