Every year, we release the data collected from the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) on the drowning and near drowning incidents in pools and spas collected during the year, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Of course, many drownings occur outside of June, July and August, however this data samples the period of largest use of water recreation, during the summer months

- Atlantic City Pool & Spa Show 2010
Since 1982, the North East Pool & Spa Association has hosted the Atlantic City Pool & Spa Show. And for most of those years, I have been attending, or at least since about 1988. The trade show brings together vendors, manufacturers and providers of all types together with pool builders, retailers, service companies and more. The "AC Show" has distinguished itself as a national show, although nearly 3/4 of it's 12,000 attendees are from New Jersey, Pennsylvania & New York.

- CPSC hearing on Unblockable Pool Drain DefinitionThe hearing was held to discuss the rewording of the term “unblockable drains” as defined by the CPSC. I feel I made a point that a lot of other people in the industry overlooked. That was that most Certified Pool Operators (CPOs) or hotel owners do not have the correct training or knowledge to understand the wording of the law or implement the products to comply.

Let’s face it, children get into things and get into places they are not supposed to be in. The last thing you want is to have an unsupervised child around your pool. Hundreds of children die in pools every year, but this year, 2009, is different in that the number has doubled so far this year. Over 600 drownings! Please Read On!

Let’s face it , pools are a luxury item and have big costs associated with them. Everyone wants to lower their costs when it comes to operation of their pools.I think everyone is with me saving money and lowering cost , but what about getting money back? Is it possible to get money back? Yes .

- Virginia Graeme Baker Rant
Many states agree with the law but have neglected to pass state laws to enforce it . According to Kathleen Reily of the CPSC, this is "red tape" and will take some time to enact and set aside funding for enforcement. Even though this is a Federal law that will make pools safer, I have heard of county health inspectors looking the other way when it comes to the law.

With the swim season gearing up in the United States, more pools are finding out very late that they must comply with the new federal law. A lot of swimming pools are facing budget cuts in this economy and many are finding out that they do not have the money to make the upgrades to comply with the law.

Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB) was lovingly known to her friends and family as Graeme (pronounced Graham). The granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker, Graeme went with her mother, Nancy, and four sisters to a family friend’s home for a graduation party on June 15, 2002. The focal point of the party was the swimming pool and hot tub.

Every year, five hundred Manufacturers, Vendors, Importers and Entrepreneurs converge at the Atlantic City Convention Center to sell the latest and greatest products, technologies and methods of enjoying and maintaining swimming pools. POOLCENTER.com made the annual trek again this year in style riding in Jon's BMW. About a 4 hour trip from Washington DC for us. We got GPS.
